No.3

View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts after a Thunderstorm  (1836)
Thomas Cole 1801-48

It is generally agreed that British-born Thomas Cole was the founder of the Hudson River School. His family emigrated to America in 1818 settling in Steubenville, Ohio. The painting here, also known as The Oxbow, is perhaps his most famous. The river depicted is the Connecticut.
